KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha man accused of choking and beating his partner, then smashing her phone to prevent her from calling 911, was back in court Tuesday—this time for allegedly violating the conditions of his release.

Zachary J. Simon, 32, was first charged in May with felony strangulation, felony intimidation of a victim, misdemeanor battery, and disorderly conduct, all as acts of domestic abuse. According to police, he became violent during an early morning argument, repeatedly hitting the woman and using both hands to choke her until she struggled to breathe. Officers said she had visible injuries, including eye petechiae consistent with strangulation. When she tried to call 911, Simon allegedly grabbed her phone and smashed it on the ground.
Simon posted a $4,000 cash bail on June 2 and was ordered not to have contact with the woman or her residence.
Shortly after his release, Simon sent a Facebook message to Kenosha County Eye, saying: “So I never gave you permission to post my case so I’m going to expect it to be taken down. My name is Zach Simon. No need to degrade people’s names before a case is even investigated.” He also threatened to sue the news outlet.
But instead of pursuing a lawsuit, Simon found himself facing new charges.
On July 21 around midnight, Kenosha police were called back to the same residence for a report of a man with tattoos chasing a woman outside. Officers say the man matched Simon’s description and fled on foot when they tried to stop him. According to the complaint, multiple officers chased Simon through an alley and backyard until he fell and was arrested.
Simon is now charged with two counts of felony bail jumping and one count of obstructing an officer. Prosecutors allege he violated bond conditions by returning to the prohibited residence and committing new crimes. He reportedly told officers he went back to get clothes and underwear because he had been wearing the same ones for three months.
Court Commissioner William Michel II set a new cash bail at $5,000. Simon is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on July 30. He remains in custody.
