WASHINGTON, D.C. — A bipartisan majority in the U.S. House of Representatives voted Tuesday to pass H.R. 3095, legislation co-led by Congressman Bryan Steil that seeks to modernize the nation’s ZIP code system to better align with current municipal boundaries. The measure aims to tackle longstanding issues such as misdirected mail, emergency service delays, insurance discrepancies, and tax confusion.
“For too long, mismatched ZIP code boundaries have caused avoidable headaches for families across Wisconsin,” Steil said in a statement following the vote. “From delayed ambulances to inflated insurance rates and confusion over tax rebates or polling places, the consequences are serious. This bill finally puts communities back in control by requiring the U.S. Postal Service to update ZIP codes in line with local borders.”

Steil noted that residents and leaders in Mount Pleasant, Somers, Caledonia, Franklin, and Rochester have consistently raised concerns about the issue.
The bill, which passed the House 278–121, now moves to the Senate. It instructs the U.S. Postal Service to revise ZIP code assignments where current boundaries no longer reflect municipal realities. The legislation has been years in the making, clearing the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform by a 22–20 vote earlier this year.
Local leaders praised Steil’s efforts. “For years, the Village of Mount Pleasant has had issues with incorrect USPS ZIP code boundaries affecting our residents,” said Village President David DeGroot. “I’d like to thank Congressman Steil for his work moving this issue forward in the House.”
Caledonia Village President Tom Weatherston also welcomed the news: “The House’s work will help correct this longstanding issue and deliver real benefits to families in Caledonia.”
In Wisconsin alone, eight communities have petitioned federal lawmakers to address ZIP code mismatches. In one notable case, Caledonia’s Village Hall is listed under a Racine ZIP code, despite being the official seat of a separate municipality.
The bill now awaits action in the U.S. Senate.

Such cutting-edge legislation…
What a joke.
So many things that go on or more importantly, don’t go on in Washington, this is something that actually matters to local communities that only federal help can solve.
Probably getting done mostly by staffers.
Leave it alone
An insignificant RINO taking baby steps in an attempt to climb the political ladder of who’s who. Weak.
Fire all supervision in Oak creek.
Re open local distribution centers.
We have separate Zip Codes for Wilmot, Trevor, Silver Lake, Camp Lake, and Salem. Separate Post Offices too ! Even though we are now all together. Actually always have been.
Yet for as much as Paddock Lake wants to be their own True Village, not only do they still not have their own fire department, they are still under Salems Zip Code. Even after all these years of being separated from Salem. You know they once were in Salem. Funny isn’t it ?
Maybe they too can benefit from this legislation.
And really isn’t that what they want ? To be rid of anything Salem ?
Hey Alex ! Make that call
Also , they’re changing the name “mail” , to “femail”😎
There is an apartment building on the north west side of 89th street off 39th avenue. Sometimes Kenosha PO delivers their Mail and sometimes Pleasant Prairie delivers their mail.
