KENOSHA, Wis. — Residential garbage collection in Kenosha will begin later than usual Tuesday and may take longer to complete after blizzard conditions forced area landfills to close Monday.
City officials said high winds and heavy snow on March 16 prevented the transfer of waste collected earlier in the day, leaving crews with accumulated loads that must be hauled to the landfill before normal pickup routes can begin Tuesday morning.
Because of the backlog, Department of Public Works crews will first transport the previously collected waste to the landfill before starting Tuesday’s residential collection routes. That process is expected to delay the start time for regular garbage pickup and could extend collections later into the day than residents normally see.
Despite the delay, officials said all garbage placed at the curb for regularly scheduled Tuesday routes will still be collected. Residents are asked to leave their garbage carts at the curb until service is completed.
Recycling pickup will not be affected by the landfill closures and will proceed on its normal schedule.
City officials said the delay is a temporary adjustment caused by the severe weather conditions that impacted operations across the region Monday.
