On Sunday (6/30) the Kenosha Police Department responded with the Kenosha Fire Department to Simmons Island Beach after receiving calls that a 40-year-old woman was pulled out into deep water by Lake Michigan riptides. The woman’s brother-in-law, Jesus Vidal-Cervantes (35), risked his own life by swimming out and bringing her back to shore. The woman was exhausted after being in the water over 10 minutes. She was treated at a local hospital and later released.

If you plan to cool off by taking a dip in the big pond, please visit the National Weather Service’s website. Under the “Safety” link you will find “Beach Hazards”. The Beach Hazards section will provide a daily surf zone forecast for Southeast Wisconsin. For example, today’s swim risk is Low. Tonight’s is Moderate and tomorrow’s is High. Even though the swim risk during the day today is Low you should always swim within your capabilities and be aware of changes in the current. Below are the definitions of the swim risks, per the National Weather Service website.

It’s stupid to go out more than just a few yards to cool off.
After that all you’re accomplishing, is more chance of danger.
Additionally, never fight currents. Swim with them and angle back slightly.
Like a sailboat does.
There have been warnings like this off and on for the past week.
Could the city find a way to post them on the beaches or close beaches during those periods?
Or….Maybe people could take responsibility for their own safety instead of demanding more government restriction in the name of safety.

The big pond has always been dangerous and has been taking
unsuspecting lives forever. They have had warning signs
for years, but people do not read signs.
We will never fix stupid.
