KENOSHA, Wis. — The Kenosha Water Utility discharged diluted wastewater into the storm sewer system and ultimately Lake Michigan over the weekend after more than 4.5 inches of rain overwhelmed portions of the city’s sanitary sewer system. Utility officials said the bypasses were necessary to help prevent sewage backups and property damage to homes.
The first bypass began at about 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and ended about 30 minutes later. Additional bypasses began around 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, and continued until about 9 p.m. that evening.
According to the Kenosha Water Utility, the city received 4.52 inches of rain during a 48-hour period. The ground was already saturated from rainfall earlier in the week, contributing to excessive flows entering the sanitary sewer collection system.
Several Bypass Locations
Saturday’s bypass occurred at 67th Street and 57th Avenue.
On Sunday, bypasses occurred at 67th Street and 57th Avenue, 89th Place and 17th Avenue, 81st Street and 25th Avenue, Fifth Avenue and 43rd Street, the 5100 block of Sheridan Road, and an overflow structure northeast of Third Avenue and 68th Street.
The Water Utility said all of the bypasses were reported to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
