WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) cast a key vote this week in favor of H.R. 1, sweeping legislation aimed at reducing costs for families, delivering tax relief to seniors, and bolstering border security. The bill, which passed both chambers of Congress, now heads to President Trump for signature.
“This bill is a win for Wisconsin workers, families, and seniors,” said Steil in a statement Wednesday. “The bill prioritizes American families over illegal immigrants, delivers a $6,000 tax cut for seniors, implements work requirements for able-bodied adults, invests in securing our border, and encourages and rewards hard work with no tax on tips and overtime.”
Among the major provisions of the bill:
- $6,000 tax deduction for seniors, removing tax liability on Social Security for 88% of recipients
- Permanent extension of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which increased wages by 4.9% and disproportionately boosted income growth for lower-wage earners
- Expanded and permanent Child Tax Credit, benefiting roughly 85,000 families in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District
- Protection of the Section 199A Small Business Deduction, which applies to more than 50,000 small businesses in the state
- Work requirements for able-bodied adults without young children enrolled in Medicaid
- A ban on Medicaid eligibility for illegal immigrants
- New funding for border patrol hiring and retention
- Elimination of federal taxes on tips and overtime pay
.
Steil emphasized that the legislation does not reduce Social Security or Medicare benefits, a concern often raised in budget debates.
In total, supporters estimate the bill will save taxpayers more than $1 trillion.
“I look forward to President Trump signing this legislation into law,” Steil said.
