KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha woman who once received unanimous approval from Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and Jewel to advance to Las Vegas on American Idol is now facing serious criminal charges in her hometown.
Vanessa M. Haapanen, 43, who previously went by Vanessa Herrick before marriage, appeared in Kenosha County Circuit Court on August 28, 2025. She was formally charged with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct, both with domestic abuse modifiers. Court Commissioner William Michel II set her bail at $500 cash. She is scheduled to return to court on October 1 for a pre-trial conference.
Details Of The Allegations
According to the criminal complaint, the case stems from an incident on August 16, 2025. Haapanen’s husband told police he was in the back seat of the couple’s vehicle with their two-year-old child while Haapanen drove them to Washington Park Pool in Kenosha. He said she appeared to be having a manic episode, and he began singing in the back seat in an effort to calm the situation and avoid confrontation in front of their child.
Instead, the husband reported, Haapanen reached into the back seat while driving and struck him with a metal water bottle. When the family arrived at the pool, he said Haapanen aggressively got in his face, prompting him to extend his arm in an effort to keep distance. At that point, she allegedly grabbed his arm, dug her fingernails into his forearm until the skin broke, and then bent his fingers back toward his wrist while threatening to break them. He told police the incident caused him pain and was not consensual.
The responding officer, Marcus Clark of the Kenosha Police Department, reported that the husband still had visible injuries on his forearms when interviewed two days later. He also told police this was not an isolated incident and that he had documented previous acts of violence by Haapanen. He further alleged she had placed a hidden camera in their home and may have put a tracker on his vehicle, noting that she often knew exactly when he left for work or other stops he made.
When contacted by police at her residence, Haapanen reportedly told officers she did not recall anything that happened at Washington Park that day and declined to say more.
If convicted, Haapanen faces up to nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine on the battery charge, and up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine on the disorderly conduct charge. Together, the maximum possible penalties amount to nearly one year behind bars and $11,000 in fines.
From Idol Stage To Courtroom
Haapanen first caught attention nationally in 2005 when she auditioned for American Idol under her maiden name, Vanessa Herrick. In her televised audition, she impressed all four judges — Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and guest judge Jewel — who unanimously voted to send her to Las Vegas for the next round of the competition.
What became of her journey after that appearance remains unknown, and her run faded from the national spotlight. Now, two decades later, she is again in the public eye for very different reasons.

Absolutely dreadful, The worst performance I’ve ever seen in my jolly life
Yeah, it looks to me like she could potentially be a whacka doodle!
Love that term.
So many people out in the world that for the most part are functional but truly are in need of help.
Let’s just hope the people around them can convince Wacka Doodle to seek help.
They truly don’t believe they need help yet they do
She was never going to make it as a singer anyway.
Hi Kevin. This post is off-topic, but I have a few news tips for you. There was a stabbing at Twisted Kiwi on Saturday night or early Sunday morning; it was confirmed by the bar’s owner on the business’ Facebook page. I also heard of a Saturday night shooting near the Boys and Girls Club; it was discussed on Facebook with no confirmation by authorities. And, last but not least, I heard reports of a deadly DUI crash on 52nd Street somewhere between Sheridan Road and 22nd Avenue. Thanks for your tireless efforts in covering the local crime and court beats.

From American Idol to an episode on Cops
Very sad. She was a very nice girl/young woman way back. I hope she gets the support she needs.
