KENOSHA, Wis. — A 67-year-old Kenosha man, and former corrections Sergeant is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting his elderly wife during a dispute that began when she asked him to take a shower for the first time in two months.
Michael R. Navrotsky was formally charged Monday with felony intimidation of a victim, strangulation and suffocation, substantial battery, and disorderly conduct — all as acts of domestic abuse and with enhanced penalties because the victim is over 60. Kimberly Navrotsky, 68, was hospitalized with a broken nose, facial bruising, and marks on her neck and back.
According to the criminal complaint, Kimberly told police she and her husband began arguing on Saturday, June 21, after she told him he could not sleep on her clean sheets unless he showered. Navrotsky allegedly grabbed her throat, cutting off her breathing for several seconds, then punched her in the face three times with a closed fist.
Kimberly attempted to flee and call 911 from their bedroom, but Navrotsky reportedly yanked the phone from her hand and twisted her ankle to stop her from making the call. She eventually escaped to a neighbor’s home, where she was able to contact police.
Responding officers noted Kimberly was actively bleeding from the nose and had visible facial injuries. She was taken to Aurora Hospital on 75th Street, where medical staff confirmed her nose was broken and sutured a laceration on her face.
Navrotsky later told police that Kimberly had struck him first and that he “backhanded” her in self-defense. Officers observed no injuries to the back of his head and described a small cut on his arm as superficial and already scabbing over. Kimberly denied injuring him and suggested he had cut himself.
She also told detectives that Navrotsky has a history of delusional episodes and early onset dementia diagnosed by VA doctors, but that he has refused to seek treatment. She said she believed this could have contributed to his violent behavior.
Navrotsky appeared in court Monday, where Court Commissioner William Michel II set cash bail at $5,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1.
If convicted on all counts with penalty enhancements, Navrotsky could face more than 20 years in prison.
