BRISTOL, Wis. — A 45-year-old man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly choking a woman during a domestic altercation at his home in the 7700 block of 128th Avenue.
Elijah William Cook Sr. was charged Tuesday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with strangulation and suffocation, battery, and disorderly conduct. Court Commissioner William Michel II set cash bail at $3,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 30.
According to the criminal complaint, deputies with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department responded to Cook’s residence on May 25 after he called to report his son banging on the door. When deputies arrived, the son appeared upset and claimed Cook had assaulted his sister the previous night.
As deputies investigated, the woman involved in the alleged assault and her boyfriend arrived on scene. She told deputies that during a visit the night before, a heated argument led to Cook following her to her vehicle and choking her with both hands while she sat in the driver’s seat. She reported struggling to breathe and feared passing out before her boyfriend intervened.
Deputies documented injuries on the woman’s neck and elbow consistent with her account. The boyfriend told authorities he witnessed the incident and that Cook threatened to kill him if he did not leave immediately.
Cook denied choking the woman, stating he was trying to prevent her from driving while intoxicated and only grabbed the steering wheel.
The strangulation charge is a Class H felony, carrying a maximum sentence of six years in prison. The battery and disorderly conduct charges are misdemeanors.
