KENOSHA, Wis. — A Kenosha woman is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly attacking her adult daughter during a domestic dispute and striking her 9-month-old grandson in the process.
Tiffany N. Tyler, 44, was charged Friday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with one felony count of child abuse and five misdemeanors, including battery, resisting an officer, and three counts of disorderly conduct—two of which include domestic abuse enhancers.
According to the criminal complaint, officers with the Kenosha Police Department responded to Tyler’s residence on June 18 after receiving a 911 call reporting that a baby had been hit. When officers arrived, they located the caller at a separate location. She told police that an argument with her mother had escalated into physical violence inside the home.
She said Tyler grabbed her by the hair and dragged her onto a couch where her infant son was lying. Both women landed on top of the child. Tyler allegedly refused to release her grip or get off the baby. A male relative intervened, attempting to separate them. The complaint states that Tyler then began hitting the male and struck him with a belt.
The woman retreated into a bathroom with the infant, but Tyler and the male relative followed. During the continued struggle inside the bathroom, Tyler allegedly struck the baby while fighting with the male. The woman left the house with the infant and contacted police out of concern for their safety. She later signed a 72-hour no-contact order against her mother.
When officers responded to the home to check the welfare of those inside, they said Tyler initially refused to open the door and shouted at them through it. Believing the baby could still be inside and possibly injured, officers entered without consent. Tyler allegedly blocked their path and refused commands to step aside. As officers attempted to detain her, she reportedly resisted by tensing her arms, pulling away, grabbing furniture, and yelling. Officers noted the strong smell of alcohol on her breath.
Tyler was arrested and taken to the Kenosha County Jail. During her initial court appearance on Friday, Court Commissioner William Michel II ordered a $1,500 cash bail and imposed a no-contact order with the alleged victims. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 27.
If convicted on all counts, Tyler faces up to five years and nine months in custody and over $30,000 in potential fines.
