KENOSHA, Wis. – A 52-year-old Kenosha man is facing a felony drunk driving charge after allegedly attempting to flee police in a McDonald’s drive-thru while under the influence.

William G. Wood was formally charged Monday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with his fourth offense of operating while intoxicated, along with misdemeanor counts of obstructing an officer and failure to stop his vehicle for law enforcement.

According to the criminal complaint, a McDonald’s employee called police around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, to report an apparently “very drunk” man in a black Jeep at the drive-thru of the restaurant located at 12224 75th Street.

When Officer Kreuser of the Kenosha Police Department arrived, he found Wood in the vehicle. The officer noted that Wood’s eyes were glassy, his speech was slurred, and he was confused about his location and how many drinks he had consumed. Wood allegedly claimed he had just left the Brat Stop and had consumed two Miller Lite beers.

Despite repeated commands to remain in place, Wood allegedly attempted to drive off, prompting a brief pursuit through the parking lot and onto nearby 74th Street. Police say he eventually pulled into the Comfort Inn parking lot and stopped. He then exited the vehicle against orders and laid on the ground, where he was handcuffed.

Wood refused a blood draw at the hospital, but officers obtained a search warrant and collected a sample. His prior OWI convictions occurred in 2000, 2001, and 2002 in Waukesha, Milwaukee, and Kenosha.

Court Commissioner William Michel II set cash bail at $2,500 during Wood’s initial appearance Monday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 1.

If convicted of the felony OWI, Wood faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The misdemeanor charges each carry maximum penalties of nine months in jail and additional fines.
