KENOSHA, Wis. — A Salem man accused of threatening to kill his longtime partner with a dagger, confining her against her will, and assaulting her during a violent series of events earlier this year remains in custody as the case moves closer to trial.
Ascencion D. Obregon, 43, appeared in Kenosha County intake court on Monday and hired a new attorney. He is currently being held on a $25,000 cash bond in the domestic abuse case, along with an additional $5,000 bond in a separate felony bail jumping case. He is scheduled to return to court for a final pre-trial hearing on September 10 before Judge Gerad Dougvillo.
The more serious of the two cases stems from a string of incidents on January 8 and 9, 2025. According to a criminal complaint, Obregon became paranoid and violent at the couple’s home in the Village of Bristol, accusing the woman of poisoning him and confining her in the bathroom while he showered. Prosecutors allege he kept her under surveillance throughout the day, ensuring she did not have access to a phone and warning that she was going to die.
The following day, after allegedly demanding money and accusing the woman of tainting his cigarettes with cocaine, Obregon is accused of threatening to kill her and brandishing a dagger. He allegedly forced her into his truck, drove erratically toward Racine, and repeatedly screamed that he was going to end her life. During the drive, he allegedly punched her in the arm and placed the dagger to her cheek.
The woman eventually escaped by alerting employees at Racine Auto & Scrap, who brought her to a back office and called police. Obregon fled the scene in his truck before officers arrived.
Obregon is charged with eight counts in the domestic violence case (2025CF54), including second-degree recklessly endangering safety, false imprisonment, battery, threats to injure, and disorderly conduct, all as acts of domestic abuse. Several charges include enhancers for use of a dangerous weapon and for his status as a repeat offender. He was convicted in 2022 of felony substantial battery, also involving domestic violence.
The separate bail jumping case (2025CF324) was filed earlier this year after prosecutors discovered Obregon had been contacting the same victim while in jail in 2022 — despite being under active no-contact orders in two earlier domestic abuse cases. Prosecutors say Obregon made repeated phone calls and sent over 20 messages to the woman from jail.
During Monday’s court hearing, deputies had to instruct Obregon multiple times to face forward after he repeatedly turned around and blew kisses to the gallery. Courtroom protocol prohibits such behavior, which can be seen as a form of intimidation or disruption, especially in sensitive domestic abuse cases.
No trial date has been set, but with a final pre-trial hearing on the calendar and no mention of a plea agreement, the case appears to be heading for a jury trial. If convicted on all charges with the applicable enhancers, Obregon faces the potential of decades in prison.
