KENOSHA, Wis. — With heavy hearts, the Harborside community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Mr. David Underwood, a beloved 7th-grade social studies teacher, who passed away this past weekend while on a family vacation. Principal Trent Barnhart informed students and families of the devastating news Monday morning.

“The news of Mr. Underwood’s passing is unexpected and heartbreaking,” Barnhart wrote. “Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with Mr. Underwood’s family at this time as they grieve through this tragic loss.”
Known for his deep care, infectious positivity, and powerful presence in and out of the classroom, Underwood was described as more than a teacher—he was a mentor, father, husband, friend, and guiding light to many.
“If you were lucky to have Mr. Underwood as a part of your life, he in some way left a lasting impact on you,” Barnhart said. “His love for teaching, for Harborside, and for our students shined through in every aspect of his life.”
Principal Barnhart shared that Mr. Underwood embodied the values of Harborside and EL Education, especially the spirit of “Crew”—a schoolwide philosophy rooted in community, compassion, and mutual support.
Although his physical presence will be missed in the building and hallways, Barnhart said Mr. Underwood’s legacy will continue to live on through the students, colleagues, and families he inspired.
“To honor Mr. Underwood’s life, I encourage you to live like he did,” Barnhart said. “Be the friend who reaches out. Speak up against injustice. Ask questions to better understand someone. Spread joy with humor, music, and dance. Be the light when the world feels dark.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Harborside is offering support for grieving students and families. Counseling staff will be available throughout the week during summer school hours, and additional support will be offered Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. for anyone needing a space to reflect, grieve, or connect. Alumni are also invited.
“You may be hurting just as much as our current Harborside Pirates,” Barnhart wrote in a follow-up message. “Please know our doors are open for you too.”
The loss has sparked an outpouring of support on social media, where former students, staff, and families are sharing memories, condolences, and tributes to the man many described as the best teacher they ever had.
“Today, your heart may still ache and tears may still come,” Barnhart wrote, “but also save some room to be proud—proud to have been connected to someone who impacted you in one way or another.”
He closed with words Mr. Underwood often shared with students: “I hope you know your worth. Leave the world a better place as you make your presence known.”

Truly was one of the greatest educators at that school! Always such a positive light
Great man with an even greater heart.
Do you know what happened by chance?
So sad.
From what I understand, he slipped around a waterfall while on vacation. That’s what I gathered from his wife’s Facebook post..
