BRISTOL, Wis. — Kenosha County is warning residents about a phishing scam that mimics official zoning and land-use billing to trick property owners into wiring money. The bogus invoices, which have used the county’s logo and address but arrive from non-county email accounts, have targeted people with applications pending before the County Board’s Planning, Development & Extension Education Committee.
Planning & Development Director Andy Buehler said the county will never ask applicants to wire fees. Legitimate payments are accepted in person or by mail at the Planning & Development office, or through the county’s online permitting portal.
“If you receive an invoice that is unexpected or does not appear legitimate, please contact our office to verify before you submit any sort of payment,” Buehler said. He noted that similar scams have circulated in other counties and states and now appear to be targeting Kenosha County.
Residents who suspect a fraudulent invoice should call the Division of Planning & Development at 262-857-1895 to confirm whether any fees are due and how to pay them properly. Officials emphasized that unexpected email requests for wire transfers are a red flag and urged applicants to verify sender addresses and payment instructions directly with the county.
