KENOSHA, Wis. – A Kenosha man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after a jury found him guilty of illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Following a three-day trial in Kenosha County Circuit Court, 29-year-old Gerald Jones was convicted of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon and Disorderly Conduct with a Dangerous Weapon as a repeater. Both charges stemmed from a May 2022 incident in which Jones allegedly pointed a handgun at a group of people during a confrontation outside a home on the 6800 block of 14th Avenue.

Jones had been out on a $2,500 cash bond since shortly after his arrest. After the verdict was read, Judge Angelina Gabriele revoked his bail and ordered sheriff’s deputies to take him into custody. Sentencing is scheduled for July 14. Gabriele is known for imposing stiff penalties in firearms cases.

According to the criminal complaint, police responded to a report that Jones had been sending threats to his ex-girlfriend and then showed up at her residence with two other individuals. Witnesses told officers that Jones allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened the group. A bystander took a photograph showing Jones placing what appeared to be a handgun back into his waistband.

Police later located the vehicle Jones had allegedly fled in and recovered two firearms—one of which had a defaced serial number and was found partially concealed under a seat. A second firearm, a Glock 17, was claimed by a woman who held a concealed carry permit. She denied knowledge of the other weapon.

Jones was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior felony conviction in March 2022 for drug possession. The repeater enhancement added to his sentence exposure.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the officers from the Kenosha Police Department who diligently investigated this case and to the jury for all their time and attentiveness in listening to all the facts and reaching appropriate verdicts that were supported by the evidence,” Assistant District Attorney Daniel Tombasco told Kenosha County Eye after the trial. “Convicted felons who illegally possess guns represent a significant threat to public safety, and we will continue to aggressively prosecute them to ensure that all the citizens in Kenosha County remain safe in their respective communities.”

Jones faces a maximum of 14 years in prison for the firearm conviction, including the repeater penalty, and an additional 2 years for the disorderly conduct charge with dangerous weapon and repeater enhancers.

“Today’s verdict sends a clear message: if you are a convicted felon who chooses to arm yourself and endanger our community, you will be held accountable,” said Kenosha County District Attorney Xavier Solis. “Assistant District Attorney Tombasco secured justice with a focused and fearless prosecution, ensuring that Gerald Jones Jr. was convicted for illegally possessing a firearm. Kenosha County is safer because of his hard work and commitment to public safety.”

This marks three for three for the Kenosha County DA’s office this week with Jury trials.

  3. Better decisions need to be made in the heat of the moment. Everyone says and does things in the heat of the moment but when your raised by the goverment system you end up in the police system. Stop handing out resources to people who don’t want better for themselves and their children. Housing paying for there homes while they walk around in fashion and drive around new cars with no insurance half the time. Make that make sense!!! Or the way the government just allows people to sit on disability and are able to work they don’t because the have figured out what they need to say to the right people to get free money to them, while we are the one’s working and won’t have what we paid into because the government has given it all away. And a judicial system that will set an example with one but not all no matter what color, race, ethnicity, or gender a person wants to call themselves justice should be fair and equal.
